Chapter 50: Why are you angry

Rushing through my morning routine, I splashed water on my face and brushed out the tangles in my hair. I dressed quickly in a simple gown, not bothering with anything too elaborate. My mind was racing with thoughts of what might have transpired while I was asleep.

As I made my way to the dining room, my stomach growled in protest, reminding me that I had skipped breakfast. Wh I tered the room, the table was set with an array of dishes, a feast fit for royalty. But what caught my atttion wasn\'t the food – it was Seraphina.

She sat at the head of the table, her expression unreadable. Her eyes were fixed on the plate in front of her, and there was a tsion in her posture that I hadn\'t se before. She looked…angry? No, that wasn\'t quite right. She looked unsettled, as if something was deeply troubling her.

"Good afternoon, Seraphina," I greeted her cautiously, taking a seat across from her.

She glanced up briefly, her gaze sharp and fleeting. "Afternoon," she replied curtly, her tone clipped.

I frowned, feeling a pang of worry. "Is everything alright? You seem…upset."

Her eyes met mine for a fraction of a second before she looked away again. "I\'m fine," she said, though the tightness in her voice suggested otherwise.

I took a deep breath, trying to keep my own emotions in check. "I\'m sorry I overslept. I didn\'t mean to worry you."

She didn\'t respond immediately, instead stabbing a piece of meat on her plate with a little more force than necessary. "It\'s not that," she finally said, her voice softer but still strained.

I waited, hoping she would elaborate, but she didn\'t. The silce betwe us grew, heavy and uncomfortable. I picked at my food, my appetite waning with each passing minute.

"Seraphina, please talk to me," I implored, my concern mounting. "Whatever it is, we can face it together."

She finally looked up at me, her eyes a stormy mix of emotions. "Elara, it\'s complicated," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "There\'s so much happing right now, and I don\'t want to burd you with it."

I reached across the table, my fingers lightly touching hers. "You never burd me. We\'re in this together, remember?"

Her expression softed for a momt, but th the guarded look returned. She sighed, pulling her hand away and standing up. "I have some things to attd to. Enjoy your lunch."

Before I could say anything more, she turned and walked out of the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts and the untouched food.

I sat there for a few minutes, trying to process the brief and tse interaction. Seraphina was always so strong and composed, but something was clearly bothering her. And the fact that she wouldn\'t share it with me made me feel ev more helpless.

After forcing down a few bites of food, I decided I couldn\'t just sit a and do nothing. I needed to find out what was going on and how I could help. Maybe someone else knew what was troubling her.

I made my way to the library, hoping to find Nyx. She oft had insights that others missed, and she was one of the few people Seraphina trusted implicitly. As I walked through the palace, I couldn\'t shake the feeling that something was very wrong. The guards seemed more alert than usual, their eyes darting a nervously.

Wh I reached the library, Nyx was there, poring over a large, ancit-looking book. She looked up as I tered, her ke eyes immediately noticing my troubled expression.

"Elara, what\'s wrong?" she asked, closing the book and giving me her full atttion.

"Have you se Seraphina?" I asked, sitting down across from her. "She\'s be acting strange, and she won\'t tell me what\'s going on."

Nyx frowned, her brow furrowing in thought. "I hav\'t se her since early this morning. She was in a hurry, but she didn\'t say why."

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "She seemed angry and unsettled at lunch, but she wouldn\'t talk to me about it. I feel like there\'s something serious happing, and she\'s keeping me in the dark."

Nyx reached out and patted my hand reassuringly. "Seraphina is very protective of you. If something is bothering her, it likely has to do with keeping you safe. But I understand your frustration. Maybe I can help you find out more."

We spt the next hour discussing various possibilities, from political intrigue to threats from outside the kingdom. Nyx suggested that we speak to some of the palace guards who might have se or heard something unusual.

As we walked through the palace, questioning the guards, a picture began to form. There had be increased activity near the borders, and there were rumors of a rogue mercary group causing trouble. It was possible that Seraphina was dealing with this threat personally, which would explain her unusual behavior.

We evtually made our way to the training gs, where a group of guards was practicing combat drills. One of them, a seasoned warrior named Marcus, seemed to know more than the others.

"Marcus, can we have a word?" Nyx called out.

Marcus jogged over, wiping sweat from his brow. "Of course, Lady Nyx. How can I help?"

"We\'re trying to find out what\'s be troubling Seraphina," I explained. "Have you noticed anything unusual rectly?"

He nodded, his expression serious. "There have be whispers about a rogue mercary named Varis. He\'s known for taking dangerous and highly paid jobs, and rumor has it that he\'s be hired to cause trouble here."

"Do you know who hired him?" Nyx asked.

Marcus shook his head. "No, but Seraphina has be very focused on finding out. She\'s be working closely with her spies and hasn\'t be getting much rest. I think she\'s trying to keep it all under control without worrying you."

My heart ached at the thought of Seraphina carrying such a heavy burd alone. "Thank you, Marcus," I said, feeling both grateful and more determined than ever to support her.

As we headed back to the palace, I couldn\'t help but feel a mix of emotions. I was worried about Seraphina, frustrated that she wouldn\'t confide in me, and determined to prove that I could handle whatever challges came our way.

By the time we returned, it was late afternoon. I found Seraphina in her study, poring over maps and documts. She looked up as I tered, her eyes filled with a mixture of surprise and exhaustion.

"Elara, what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice softer than it had be at lunch.

"I wanted to talk to you," I said, closing the door behind me. "I know something serious is going on, and I want to help."

She sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Elara, it\'s dangerous. I don\'t want you to get involved."

"I\'m already involved," I insisted, crossing the room to stand beside her. "We\'re partners, remember? Whatever you\'re facing, we face it together."

Her eyes searched mine, and for a momt, I saw a flicker of vulnerability. "I just want to keep you safe," she admitted.

"I know," I said, taking her hand. "But you don\'t have to do it alone. Tell me what\'s going on, and we\'ll figure it out together."

She hesitated, th nodded slowly. "Alright. There\'s a mercary named Varis. He\'s be hired to disrupt our kingdom, possibly to target you specifically. I\'ve be trying to track him down and find out who hired him."

"Marcus mtioned him," I said. "Why didn\'t you tell me?"

"I didn\'t want to worry you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I can see now that keeping you in the dark was a mistake."

I squeezed her hand, my heart swelling with a mixture of love and determination. "We\'ll find him and stop him. Together."

She nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Together."

The rest of the day was spt in preparation. Seraphina shared everything she knew about Varis, and we formulated a plan to track him down. As the sun began to set, a sse of purpose settled over me. I was ready to face whatever challges lay ahead, with Seraphina by my side.

As we prepared for bed, Seraphina looked at me with a mixture of love and determination. "Elara, no matter what happs, I want you to know that I love you. More than anything."

We climbed into bed, and as I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sse of peace and strgth. Together, we were unstoppable. And whatever challges lay ahead, I knew we would face them together.
