Chapter 118 - 118: 117 Take care of her

His words instantly dissipated the hint of awkwardness inside of Wen Ran. Although Gu Kai’s manner showed openness and warmth, she could sense the longing he held for his sister. Comforting words slipped out, “Older Brother Gu, surely you’ll find your sister someday.”

A bit of determination seeped into Gu Kai’s smile as he replied, “Yes, I believe so as well.”

Over the years, he never stopped looking for her. And he believed that someday, he would surely find her.

“Here, have this.”

To keep him from becoming emotional, Wen Ran quickly changed the subject. Taking some grilled meat from the plate, she handed it to him. Gu Kai accepted it with a laugh, and after taking a bite, his smiling expression disappeared. He looked at her curiously, “Ranran, why are asking about Cheng Jia?”

Having just finished her skewer, Wen Ran’s eyes flashed upon hearing his question. She replied nonchalantly, “You must have been the one to perform

Cheng Jia’s operation. If the situation was bad, you probably wouldn’t be sitting here eating skewers.”

Gu Kai’s nodded, his laughter returned, “Ranran, has anyone ever told you how smart you are?”

Wen Ran raised an eyebrow, returning his comment with an ambiguous look. Gu Kai laughed even more heartily in response.

His laughter was infectious, and Wen Ran’s mood lifted. She picked up another skewer and began to eat. Although she had known Gu Kai for a short time, being with him felt as easy and intimate like being with her own brother.

Though she didn’t ask, Gu Kai couldn’t help but inform her, “Cheng Jia was injured on the head, it might take two or three months for her to fully recover. MO Xiuchen tells me that when they were passing by a construction site, a brick fell from above. Cheng Jia pushed MO Xiuchen away, and she got hit herself.”

At his words, Wen Ran’s expression shifted slightly. Her hand, holding the skewer, became a little stiff.

The food in her mouth lost its taste. She wanted to appear indifferent, but even though she could deceive Gu Kai, she couldn’t lie to her own heart.

Inside, she felt very uncomfortable.

Logically, if it wasn’t for Cheng Jia pushing away MO Xiuchen, the victim could have been him.

Now that he was safe, she should be grateful to Cheng Jia. But she just felt uncomfortable.

She was more aware than anyone of Cheng Jia’s feelings for MO Xiuchen. Cheng Jia had saved him years ago and had saved him once again today. MO Xiuchen, no matter how cold and emotionless he might appear, could not continue to dismiss her.

It was evident from how he followed her to the hospital, pushed her into the hospital and then stayed on guard.

“Ranran, do you also know of Cheng Jia’s feelings for MO Xiuchen? Technically, as MO Xiuchen’s good friend, there are some things I shouldn’t tell you.” Gu Kai paused, choosing his words carefully.

He didn’t like Cheng Jia, and he liked even less her admiration for MO Xiuchen. Even if she truly saved MO Xiuchen’s life, she should not interfere in someone else’s marriage. Knowing that MO Xiuchen is a married man, yet she refused to restrain her feelings.

Pulling up a smile, Wen Ran softly said, “Older Brother Gu, thank you for telling me all this.”

Gu Kai didn’t say anything, only looking at her with concern in his eyes. Wen

Ran’s smile wavered temporarily. She took a moment, then continued, “MO Xiuchen is such an amazing person, it’s normal that Cheng Jia likes him. I knew this from the start, she didn’t bother hiding it, she told me directly.”

Gu Kai’s gaze shifted slightly, somewhat surprised that Cheng Jia had openly told Wen Ran she loved MO Xiuchen. Was that a challenge? Or something else?

“MO Xiuchen is not the type to be promiscuous. Even if Cheng Jia had saved him twice, there couldn’t be anything else between them. I can guarantee this, you don’t have to worry.”

Fearing that Wen Ran might overthink, Gu Kai quickly reassured her.

The dedication and care MO Xiuchen showed towards Wen Ran was something he had observed. Judging from Wen Ran’s expressions, he believed she must hold some regard for MO Xiuchen as well.

Wen Ran nodded, saying, “I know, if MO Xiuchen was fickle-minded, he wouldn’t have stayed away from women for so long.”

Gu Kai chuckled lightly. Some things were better explained by MO Xiuchen himself. MO Xiuchen stayed away from women, not just because he wasn’t fickle-hearted, there were other reasons as well.

Wen Ran was about to take a sip of water when her phone suddenly rang.

Gu Kai swallowed the skewer he was eating and laughed, “Perhaps it’s MO

Xiuchen.”

Sizing up the time, Cheng Jia had probably been transferred to the ward already, and MO Xiuchen might have handled Cheng Jia’s affairs, then called

Wen Ran.

Wen Ran smiled, cleaning her oily hands with a tissue before taking out her phone. Seeing the caller ID, she lightly replied, “It’s him.” She pressed the answer button, speaking softly, “Hello.”

“Ranran, where are you now?”

There was a momentary silence on the other end of the line, then MO Xiuchen’s low voice came through, his first words were to ask her where she was.

It wasn’t surprising, even if Gu Kai on the other side kept quiet, they were sitting on an open-air barbecue stall at the night market, a bustling place with high levels of noise.

It was indeed rather chaotic there.

Wen Ran answered truthfully, “Mmm, I’m out eating. Why are you calling at this time? How is Cheng Jia?”

“She’s out of surgery now, the anesthesia has not yet worn off and she hasn’t woken up. Where are you? It’s noisy there; are you with Bai Xiaoxiao?”

“Ah, it is a bit noisy here, is her injury serious?

Wen Ran vaguely responded and deflected the topic, asking about Cheng Jia’s condition.

When Cheng Jia was mentioned, MO Xiuchen’s voice became heavy, “It’s a bit serious, and it may take some time to fully recover. More importantly, her parents are out traveling overseas. There’s no one to take care of her.”

Wen Ran was stunned. MO Xiuchen said that Cheng Jia’s parents were overseas, implying is he going to take care of her?

For a moment, she didn’t know how to respond and simply kept silent.

MO Xiuchen didn’t wait for her to speak and explained, “Cheng Jia was injured because of me. Now that her parents are not in the country, it’s only right for me to take care of her in their absence. I’ve asked Gu Kai to arrange for a special nursing assistant, to provide twenty-four-hour care. Nonetheless, I intend to wait till she wakes up before leaving tonight.”

“Oh!”

Wen Ran lightly pursed her lips. Being in an open space had its perks, she only needed to look up to see the serene night sky.

On the opposite side, Gu Kai was leisurely eating skewers. His eyes casually landed on Wen Ran’s face and caught the subtle changes in her expression. Though he couldn’t hear what MO Xiuchen had said, he could guess from her reactions that MO Xiuchen had probably been explaining something concerning Cheng Jia.

“Don’t stay out too late, it’s not safe for two girls. I’ll let Little Liu come and pick you up.”

MO Xiuchen didn’t explain the reason for Cheng Jia’s injury but quickly changed topics instead..
