Chapter 135: Gynecology and obstetrics

Chapter 135: Gynecology and obstetrics

Zhang Fan stopped thinking about the pediatrics department incident on the very next day. Even the government couldn’t do anything about shameless people like that, so what could an ordinary doctor like himself do! He decided to treat it as if he had been bitten by a wild dog, and rest for the time being!

Zhang Fan learned a good lesson. It was the first time he had ever met with such a patient’s family in his two years of work so far.

Zhang Fan hadn’t wanted to talk about what happened, but he was forced to as he couldn’t explain away the sudden week of vacation he received. As he ate at Shao Hua’s home, both of Shao Hua’s parents complained about such wicked parents, while Shao Hua held Zhang Fan’s hand and looked at him in worry, afraid that he was still feeling down. His sister Jingshu was also really angry about what happened to him.

Zhang Fan didn’t need to go and check on the renovations to his apartment home. Shao Hua’s father was quite bored and actually enjoyed chatting with the home renovators. That was why he was actually quite happy to go there every day to watch over the renovation.

Jingshu’s official letter of acceptance to Shanghai University arrived at Lan City. She would be attending Shanghai University’s branch in Minhang District. For her first year, she would only be taking general studies courses. She would only select a major starting from her second year of college.

It was now time to think about helping Jingshu reach Shanghai. She needed to be there by September for the start of school. Although there was still slightly more than a month, preparations would need to be made beforehand. Zhang Fan wouldn’t have the time to help. He had discovered just how lacking he was still in overall medical knowledge due to his short stay in the pediatrics department.

“You should just focus on your work. Jingshu asked me, my mom, and your mom to help bring her to Shanghai together. I’ll also take both your mom and my mom to tour Shanghai,” Shao Hua told Zhang Fan as they discussed this matter.

“That’s fine, but you’ll have to go to Lan City first, then.”

“That’s no problem at all. No need for you to worry. I’ll definitely bring Jingshu to her college before school starts, and safely bring both our mothers back.”

“Haha! You’re the best!”

Li Xiao found an excellent location for Ma Wentao to establish his planned hospital at: a three-story building next door to Chasu City Women and Children’s Hospital. This empty building had previously been a hotel. However, there had been some problems with the hotel’s investors, so the property was now available for rent. This was a wonderful location because of its proximity to the women’s and children’s hospital!

When Li Xiao told this to Ma Wentao, he immediately said, “Wonderful, this location is so amazing, Aunt Li! It really is so great! Just directly rent it for me. I’ll come back to Chasu City in a few days with the hospital design blueprints!”

Why did Ma Wentao want to start a hospital in a relatively smaller city first? He was no idiot. It wasn’t like his own money had grown on trees. Although opening up a hospital was for the sake of practice, he still didn’t want to lose money. Of course he would be happy to earn more money. And since he was properly working in business, his father wouldn’t even be able to find an excuse to object. Properly and legally earning money was something that anyone could be proud of.

His aunt Li Xiao helped him deal with all the necessary paperwork for starting a hospital, as well as the hospital renovation. Ma Wentao had already planned things out. He would start by purchasing only the most common medical equipment for checkups. As for more specific medical equipment such as blood test equipment, electrocardiograms, microscopes for examining urine and stool samples and so on, and all other needed laboratory test results, he would simply collaborate with a public hospital.

Since Ma Wentao had money, none of this would be a problem for him! He had already planned out how to develop his hospital after hiring the necessary number of expert doctors. As long as his hospital was profitable, and he managed to raise some expert doctors loyal to him, everything would go well.

Ma Wentao had truly gotten lucky with this location. Chasu City Women and Children’s Hospital had medical equipment equal in quality to Chasu City Hospital’s. This was because the Chinese government had been majorly supporting the development of women and children’s medical facilities in the past few years, which was how Chasu City Women and Children’s Hospital had such good medical equipment.

Zhang Fan felt much better after one week of vacation time and rest. The patient’s family also left the hospital alone after seeing that Superintendent Ouyang refused to compromise with them or give them anything. They couldn’t handle wasting their time anymore at the hospital with no benefits obtained!

Chasu City Hospital was quite complete in all of its department types. It was just that not all departments would be of the same size. The four major departments were internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and pediatrics. All other departments would be subcategories under these four major departments.

The previous gynecology department director of Chasu City Hospital had used her connections to become the superintendent of Chasu City Women and Children’s Hospital. The current Chasu City Hospital gynecology director was Cheng Hong, an expert doctor that Superintendent Ouyang had personally invited from the border province’s provincial capital hospital. Cheng Hong had no hope of becoming department director in the provincial hospital, as she only had a master’s degree, and there were plenty of doctorate degree students at the provincial hospital who were also expert doctors. Cheng Hong had some conversations with Superintendent Ouyang and agreed to come over to Chasu City to become a department director here.

The more skilled doctors might not all want to be hospital superintendents, but they would definitely want to be at least department director. This was a matter of authority. Without regards to the benefits associated with the director’s position, skilled doctors would want to show off what they could really do by having the final authority to determine the surgery or treatment plan for a patient.

In Chasu City Hospital, there was only the gynecology department. There was no individual department for obstetrics, so obstetrics was also done in the gynecology department. The current policy in the gynecology department was that its doctors would spend six months focusing on gynecology and the other six months focusing on obstetrics. But for night shifts, there would usually only be one doctor on duty, and that doctor would be responsible for both gynecology and obstetrics. Typically, obstetrics would receive a lot more emergency treatment patients than gynecology.

Chasu City was in a nomadic district. Most nomads didn’t have the habit of coming in for regular checkups during pregnancy. They would only go to smaller local city hospitals when they were almost about to give birth. However, the smaller city hospitals would often send such patients over to Chasu City Hospital.

Director Cheng Hong was quite skilled and relatively well-known in the area. Just her name alone was able to totally suppress Chasu City Women and Children’s Hospital. Many patients would come to Chasu City Hospital just because of Director Cheng’s reputation.

Not long after China’s official name became the People’s Republic of China in 1949, there was an incident in the border province where Chinese citizens illegally crossed the border and joined other countries’ citizenships. Without going into the specifics of this incident, over all these years, many people who were originally Chinese citizens had become citizens of H Country.

However, these new H Country citizens would often still have parents or siblings still remaining in China. China’s development constantly improved after 1949. Many of the new H Country citizens thus wanted to return, but no longer had the chance.

H Country’s society and economy was a mirror of Russia’s. There was a tremendous difference between the rich and the poor, with many oligarchs. Although H Country’s hospitals would treat its citizens for free, H Country’s hospital’s doctors’ medical abilities were truly terrible. Many rich H Country citizens would instead cross the border and come to China’s border province for treatment.

Chasu City was adjacent to H Country’s border. This meant that many H Country citizens would come visit Chasu City Hospital for their illnesses. The female patient Reyihan was once such H Country citizen who was formerly a Chinese citizen back in the day. Nowadays, Reyihan worked in the gem business in H Country.

H Country had abundant mining resources. Chinese people loved gems of various colors. Reyihan’s siblings were all still in China. She often sold H Country’s gems to people in the border province, and then she would bring the border province’s agricultural and light industry products back to H Country. Over the years, she had become nouveau riche from her import-export business.

Reyihan had gone for a checkup at a hospital in H Country due to menorrhagia, or excessive menstrual bleeding. The H Country doctor had discovered during the checkup that Reyihan had a uterine myoma. The H Country doctor recommended a hysterectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the entire uterus. Reyihan was incredibly scared of this, and hurriedly came over to Chasu City Hospital to have Director Cheng Hong personally take a look at her situation.

The cause of uterine myomas was still currently unknown. All that was known was that it might be related to cell mutation in the myometrium, sex hormones, complex interactions between local growth factors and ovarian functions, hormone metabolism as controlled and regulated by the higher nervous system. It was likely that the activities of the nervous system were related to the pathogenesis of myoma. Myomas were most common in women of childbearing age who had either lost their partner to death or divorce, or who had lacking sex lives. A long period of a lacking sex life was also a potential contributing factor to causing uterine myomas. At any rate, uterine myomas most likely developed as a result of many different factors combined.

“Why do you wish to keep your uterus?” Director Cheng Hong asked as she looked over Reyihan’s medical information.

“I won’t be a woman anymore without a room to house children in!” Reyihan looked at Cheng Hong with an expression of disbelief.

“Alright, we can keep your uterus for you. You couldn’t have this surgery done in H Country?”

“Sigh! H country’s doctors are so irresponsible. One of my employees broke his bone in a car accident, and went to get metal plates. But, the hospital and doctors there said that he would require amputation! They weren’t even capable of setting his bone! That’s so scary!”

“Haha, okay then! Go ahead and fill out the paperwork for hospitalization. We’ll prepare a surgery for you.”

“Alright! Thank you, Director Cheng!” Reyihan then left while swishing her chubby butt around.

There were far too many patients similar to Reyihan who would come to Chasu City Hospital from H Country! Many years ago, they looked down on the new China, but now they were really envious! The doctors would love patients like Reyihan the most, because they were rich and wouldn’t be paying with medical insurance.

Besides, anyone who could afford to cross the border in order to have their problem treated would be someone at least financially well off. To quote such people, they preferred to use whatever was best, and money was no objection.
